The most famous of all Pretoria's landmarks is the magnificent crescent-shaped Union Buildings. It was in these terraced gardens, amid statues of Boer generals, that former 'terrorist' Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa's first black President in May 1994. While this city is undoubtedly deeply rooted in the past, it also offers visitors some up-to-the-minute experiences, with superb shops and restaurants and a vibrant arts community.
